Is anyone looking forward to getting old? Once we’ve ‘grown up’, we don’t want to grow old – and many of us tend to deny the realities of advancing age instead of facing up to them.
Age-related deafness is one of those realities. It affects around a third of people over 65, jumping to nearly half of adults over 75 years.Men are more likely to be affected by hearing loss than females and it tends to be passed down through the generations. But because hearing impairment is often gradual and barely detectable, many people don’t recognize that it’s happening.And even if they do realise it, they are often quick to deny it.
People are far more likely to turn up the volume on the radio or television or make behavioural changes before seeking medical help.In fact, studies indicate that most people ignore their diminishing hearing for around 6 years before having a check up.
Here are some of the symptoms that indicate hearing loss :
* Regularly turning up the volume button on the radio or TV
• Harder to hear people talking in noisy places
* Growing difficulty with high-pitched voices
* Increasing difficulty talking on the phone
* Withdrawal socially
• Avoiding public places where there is a lot of noise eg restaurants
* Inability to hear everyday sounds, such as a kettle boiling and a bath running
• Buzzing or ringing in the ears
* Favouring a particular side of the head
* Continually asking people to repeat themselves
The sad fact is that only one in ten people who would benefit from a hearing aid, actually wears one.Technology in hearing aids has advanced hugely, but there is still an abiding perception that hearing aids are unattractive, cumbersome and a hassle to wear.
“That’s simply not true,” said Perth hearing loss specialist, Gerry McDade, whose organisation has been at the forefront of hearing aid technology for many years.”Modern hearing aids are highly advanced, totally discreet and very effective.They can be specially programmed to assist with an individual’s hearing loss.People shouldn’t rely on hearsay – they need to see and hear the benefits of new technology for themselves.”
There’s a huge variety of hearing instruments available to people, and they can be tailored to suit any need and any budget – and plus technology is constantly improving. Some of the types of hearing aids currently on the market are behind-the-ear ones, in-the-ear, custom made in-the-canal ones and the newest and smallest ones available are ones that fit completely in the canal.
Hearing loss affects over half of sufferers in both their ears, so McDade says it’s advisable for people to wear two hearing aids.”For a better overall sound quality and a more balanced, normal sound, people should wear two hearing instruments,” he said, “which is called binaural amplification”.”And as people become more relaxed and grow in confidence, so too does their quality of life improve.”
Hearing loss affects quality of life but it can also be life-threatening ie. when someone can’t hear warning bells, cars approaching etc. If you suspect you have hearing loss or you think that someone close to you is suffering from diminishing hearing, seek professional advice.You’ll be astounded at what you’ll hear.
